Tribological Properties, Qualities, and Features

Proven Leader In Gear Oil Stability

Stability is what defines a premium quality gear oil. Stability is the most notable quality of United Bio Lube's Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 made from Stabilized2 HOBS1 and Bio Corrosion Inhibitor (BCI™) chemistries.

The overall stability of United Bio Lube's Bio Food Grade Gear Oils - ISO 320 is a function of four main qualities:

  • Oxidation Stability
  • Mechanical Shear Stability
  • Hydrolytic Stability
  • Combustion Stability

Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 made from Stabilized HOBS shows performance improvements over petroleum in nearly all physical properties:

Superior Lubricity

United Bio Lube's Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 is formulated to outperform petroleum based products. The natural oily Fluid Film of this high viscosity fluid has proven in laboratory and field tests to outperform petroleum base oils in terms of Lubricity.

Greater lubricity leads to:

  • Less Wear
  • Less Energy Consumption
  • Lower Operating Temperatures

Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 has a very high Viscosity Index, VI = 221.

Superior Oxidation Stability

Advanced Stabilized HOBS 3 technology keeps Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 from breaking down and forming acidic residues that harm rubber seals and other elastomers.

Bench tests measuring Oxidation Stability indicate United Bio Lube's Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 is superior in comparison with non-stabilized, commercial vegetable oils (i.e. Rapeseed, Canola, Soy) and mineral oils in terms of reduced oil thickening and deposits.

ASTM D-2272 Rotary Bomb Oxidation Tests (RBOT time = 250 minutes!)

Super High Viscosity Index

Prevents viscosity breakdown under high-shear conditions.

The super high, shear stable Viscosity Index (VI = 221) allows pumps to be safely started at low ambient temperatures where the flow properties of conventional straight grade petroleum based gear oils often cause problems. The high Viscosity Index of Stabilized HOBS improves operating reliability over a wide range of pump output pressures.

The high Viscosity Index reduces friction between moving parts resulting in less heat generated. Less heat means Less Energy Consumption and Lower Risk of Leaks.

Conversely, at higher operating temperatures, the high Viscosity Index maintains the proper Viscosity required to minimize internal pump Leakage and Wear.

Note:  High shear rates and turbulent flow conditions often present in gear systems can quickly destroy the molecular bonds of petroleum based gear oils (Mineral Oil, Synthetic, Synthetic Blends) over time resulting in loss of viscosity.

Thermal Stability

Withstands both High and Low temperature variations.

  • High Flash Point = 273 °C (523 °F)
  • Advanced Cold Flow Technology
  • Superb cold temperature starting and Pumpability
  • Low Pour Points = -9 °C

Super High Load Carrying Capacity

United Bio Lube's Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 naturally demonstrates a high level of wear protection against Galling and Welding in heavily loaded gears, as measured by an EP Weld Point of 200 kg.

Third party, independent test data validates that United Bio Lube's Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 is superior to conventional mineral oils in Accelerated Wear tests.

Mild Extreme Pressure and Anti-Wear additives exceed FZG Method (i.e. Load Stage 12) requirements for both turbine oils and reduction gears.

Bio Corrosion Inhibitors (BCI™)

Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 is engineered to prevent corrosion and rust from occurring on the surface of metals in both fresh and sea water environments.

Patented Bio Corrosion Inhibitor (BCI™) chemistry effectively inhibits both Corrosion of Yellow metals and Rusting of Ferrous metals.

Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 is highly resistant to moisture.

No other competitive lubricant company has this advanced BCI™ chemistry offering.

Demulsibility (Water Resistance)

Advanced Hydrolytic Stability and Demulsification properties protect against moisture damage.

Note:  Water contamination of gear oils causes poor lubrication, corrosion, and accelerated rates of oxidation of the gear oil.

United Bio Lube's Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 resists mixing and emulsification with water by pooling together micro-droplets of water and precipitating this water into larger droplets that fall out of the system.

Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 separates readily from water. Demulsifiers work in two stages to prevent emulsification and enhance water separation. First, demulsification agents Flocculate the water droplets into bubbles by forming chemical bonds between water droplets. Demulsifier molecules, absorbed on the droplet's sheath, amplify chemical attractions between water molecules, forcing them together.

In the second stage, water molecules Coalescence, or merge into larger water droplets. Demulsifiers penetrate the emulsified film to form a channel through which water drains from one droplet to the other.

Both of these mechanisms allow small, stable water bubbles to combine into larger bubbles that sink to the bottom of the gear box to be drained off.

Resistance Against Foaming

All industrial gear drives are exposed to airflow. The churning action of gears and bearings through gear oil can cause air entrainment or foaming, especially in high speed gear sets.

Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 Resists Foaming and Air Entrainment through the use of Anti-Foam agents. Anti-Foam agents are surface-active chemicals designed to prevent foam by lowering the surface tension of air bubbles. This change in surface tension causes air bubbles to either collapse or rupture.

United Bio Lube's Bio Gear Oil - ISO 320 prevents common problems due to Foaming:

  • Cavitation and Erosion
  • Increased machine operating temperatures
  • Inadequate lubrication due to reduced oil flow
  • Loss of oil film between mating surfaces of gears
  • Spongy and erratic operation
  • Loss of the gear lubricant due to overflow
  • Increased oxidation of gear oil
  • Increased gear and bearing noise

United Bio Lube's Bio Food Grade Gear Oil - ISO 320 passes the ASTM D 892, "Foaming Characteristics of Lubricating Oils" test method with Zero Foam.

Extremely Low Volatility

No Off-Gassing of harmful vapors and fumes.

  • Low Evaporation means less Make-up Gear Oil
  • Extremely Low Volatility leads to higher Flash Points
  • Durable and long lasting
